  5. in webbed slings instead of contour seats. The planes were
  6. noisy, lumbering Hercules transports designed to fly the
  7. unfriendly skies of enemy nations. But civilian passengers
  8. lucky enough to be winging it aboard military planes of the
  9. Royal Australian Air Force last week were hardly complaining.
  10. Australia's airline industry has been thrown into chaos by the
  11. resignation of all 1,640 pilots from the nation's three major
  12. domestic airlines. The walkout has threatened the booming
  13. tourist industry and grounded most flights in a country where
  14. some 250,000 people fly weekly.

  16.     The turbulence began when the pilots, who earn an average of
  17. $60,000 a year, asked for a 30% pay raise and direct
  18. negotiations with the domestic carriers, instead of the 6% set
  19. by an independent wage-fixing authority. The request was
  20. rejected by the airlines and the government, which supports the
  21. wage-fixing system as a curb against inflation. The government
  22. fears that any exception granted to pilots will set off a chain
  23. reaction among labor groups. If that happened, said Prime
  24. Minister Bob Hawke, "the economy would be buggered." Determined
  25. to stand his ground, Hawke has called in the air force. So far,
  26. however, the pilots have shown no inclination to settle for
  27. more down-to-earth wages.
